If we can locate the nest we will carry out a direct nest treatment, which will eliminate the nest in a matter of minutes. The nature of the treatment depends on the type of wasp and location of the nest, but will either involve a high volume liquid spray or blowing insecticide powder into the nest.

Types of Wasps
Europeans wasps, as their name suggests, are an invasive pest. Normally in the cold European winter their nests die off, but in the mild Australian winter they often maintain their sizes, getting bigger each year. Large European wasp nests can have over 100,000 individuals. Coupled with their very aggressive behaviour, they are a serious health threat.
European wasps also like foraging on meat (from BBQs) for their young, and sugar foods (including soft drinks) for themselves, which is why they hang around residential areas.
Not many people know, but 80% of European wasp nest are built underground, often in raised, well drained soil. This makes it a bit more challenging to both locate and eliminate the nests. In such cases, we will often blow insecticide powder into the entrance hole through conduit piping from a distance.
Native paper wasps build their nests on buildings and trees, in sheltered dry places. Typically they only build nests of a few hundred individuals, which die off each winter.
Native paper wasps typically feed on caterpillars and other insects and are generally less aggressive than European wasps. However, if disturbed they will still deliver a nasty sting.
Treatment is relatively straight forward, in that the nests tends to be exposed and so can be treated with liquid insecticide from a distance.
Honey bees are obviously not wasps and generally considered as beneficial as they are useful in pollinating crops. (Bu they aren’t native insects either). If you have a honey bee nest at your house or a swarm has arrived at your property, rather than killing them, the best option is to call an apiarist (beekeeper) to see if they can remove the nest.

Although we consider ourselves pest managers, as keeping a home pest free is more than just spraying insecticide, when it comes to wasps, we are really are just a “wasp exterminator”. You want the wasp nest eliminated and there’s not much we can do to stop another nest moving into your area next year, especially if we’re talking about European wasps.
How to Prevent a Wasp Problem…
There’s very little we can do to stop European wasp nests moving into your area, but a general pest spray to the exterior of the building can prevent native wasps building the nests for many months. Keeping vegetation trimmed back from the perimeter of the building will help too.
To make your outdoor areas less attractive to foraging European wasps
- Don’t leave uneaten pet food out
- Don’t leave food unattended
- Cover any soft drink or beer cans / glasses, if left unattended
A wasp trap can also be beneficial, to trap any foraging wasps arriving on your property and prevent them returning to their nest to pass on the location of house as a potential food source.
Wasp Nest Removal – FAQ
We don’t recommend dealing with a wasp nest without the correct safety equipment and correct products, certainly not European wasps. Tackling small native wasp nest can be done safely by homeowners, as long as the appropriate safety precautions are taken. (See below)
Wasp treatments should be carried out in the evening. Not only are all the wasps back in the nest, but generally they are lot quieter and less likely to attack.
We do not recommend non-professionals treating European wasp nests, the advice below is for the treatment of native paper wasp nests.
- Treat in the evening when all the wasps are back in the nest
- Make sure the treatment area is clear of trip hazards, children and pets
- Wear suitable protective gear
- Apply liquid insecticide from distance (according to the product label)
- Do not apply product when standing on a ladder
